Hi everyone! My Frenchie, Handsome, is 4 years old and has been my entire life since we've had him at 8 weeks ago. However, I have ONE anxiety that never seems to go away: I'm always afraid that he's going to be stolen!

I've seen a lot of Facebook posts about Frenchies being stolen from home burglaries and we just bought our FIRST home.

Am I the only one who is paranoid about this? I don't care if they steal anything else.....I just worry about him! We work from home but this makes me anxious about leaving the house at night to go grocery shopping or even on a date night.

How do you deal with this? :(

My sister has a wireless pet camera so she can check on her dogs and cats when they aren't home :)

I would say as long as you don't leave him unattended outside, lock your doors when you leave, and don't advertise your address if someone asks about him you will be just fine!

I had this concern because we were burglarized a couple of years ago while we were up the street having dinner with family. Jake was still a puppy, about 10 mos. old and he was in the kitchen in an x-pen. He saw the whole thing! I don't know what I would have done if he had been taken. So fast forward a couple of weeks and I am home by myself in the daytime and I had just gotten out of the shower. I couldn't find Jake. I looked in all of his usual favorites spots and nothing. My mind immediately went to the thought that someone had stolen him while I was in the shower. I was calling his name and then screaming his name. I called my husband bawling and crying hysterically. He calmed me down and I walked the house again. I usually kept my closet door closed so he wouldn't destroy my shoes. So on this day, when I saw the door closed I thought I had closed it. I opened it just to make sure and there he was standing in the dark with his huge eyes. He had pulled a large camera case off of a shelf and dragged it which closed the door and he was trapped.
We now live life quite differently. If we go for a 20 min. walk, the alarm is set. We also added additional cameras outside of our property. I also make sure the dogs have no acces outside when we are gone. I would make sure and lock your doors and always make it look like someone is home with a light here or there.

We have a home security system that is always on if we are not at home, and when we are sleeping. We also have doggie camera focused on the crates while at work... we can peak in on them

It's a pretty realistic fear in my opinion, as dogs being stolen is becoming more and more common.

I never walk my dogs in my neighborhood, as I don't want any of my neighbors knowing I have frenchies. We have a large privacy fence if we are outside.

We have 2 locks on our front screen door, 2 locks on our front inside door, and 2 locks on our back door. Haha.

I'll always worry. Even with home security I still felt like if they were going to take them, they're going to take them. And there's still a huge chance they won't be returned or found even if the criminal is. So I didn't think it mattered if we had it or not. It is a piece of mind while we sleep though.

I still just live my life... Try not to get hung up on "if I leave my dogs are being stolen as soon as o drive off" haha!

I think you buying your new home, new neighborhood, unfamiliar territory is adding to the anxiety. It should calm down once you're settled in!

I don't know if it's because I'm in Canada or I just don't think about these things but I have never worried that someone will steal my dogs when they are at home and I'm not. It helps that we're on a cul-de-sac (dead end street) so there's not many random people driving or walking by.

handsomesmom, I can relate! Bambi does whatever Ginger does (our dobie mix). I come home for lunch every day and when I get ready to go back to work, a lot of times Ginger won't come in the house, especially if the weather is nice. Bambi does whatever Ginger does (little pi$$pot), so on those days it is very difficult to get her to come inside. I have to get out the people food to entice her enough to come in. Our house faces a busy main road with a lot of foot traffic and on a bus route. We have a 5' fenced yard with the black aluminum fencing that looks like wrought iron. She and Ginger stand at the fence side by side and bark non-stop at the passers-by. Ever since we got Bambi, I am terrified that she is going to get stolen. The good thing is that people perceive Ginger as pretty vicious so that is a good thing.

OMG, it is chilling to think about the "what-if's" when you were burglarized!!!

Since everything worked out, that is pretty funny about him being trapped in the closet and looking at you when you opened the door! I would have been a blubbering mess, too!!!

You are not crazy for thinking that, I always worry about that as well. I don't like to advertise around the neighborhood that we have Frenchies either. Theft and fire is my biggest fear.

I can also relate.... It pops into my head occasionally. Yesterday I was convinced I hadn't locked the door and was paranoid the entire time I was out. It was locked of course.....

I have many more concerns about the car to be honest. I won't leave him at all. If he's in the car, he's coming wherever I'm going. There have been so many instances of people having their car broken into and dog taken in a split second that it has made me paranoid!

I think that "paranoid" feeling is our natural instincts at work, and I have yet to find them wrong. The only time I get into trouble is when my head overrides or dismisses my instincts. WeeDex, I am really paranoid about the car, too.

I worried so much about that that my solution was to get a pet stroller! I truthfully enjoy bringing her everywhere anyway, which I know is probably awful but I love to take her shopping, lol. Otherwise I always make sure someone is home when I go out.

I think all Frenchie owners have the same concern. They're our babies.

I bet people ohhhhh and ahhhhh over her when they see her, too! :paci:

Mavis Yes! Everyone also thinks she's a baby and they do a double take when they realize it's not.

We live in a small county (7,000 total population). I have never worried about pet theft and probably never will!

I agree I have also never worried about this. Maybe if I left my dogs outside unnatended which I never do....

I say try not to stress about it. Remember to lock your doors and just be mindful . I have definitely gotten half way to work before and turned around because I second guessed whether I locked the door or not... lol ☺❤

I've done this leaving the house too. I've left my back door wide open once! Luckily my husband was right down the street coming home as I was pulling off so it was only about 2 minutes! This was before frenchies, though. Pitbull would've bit a stranger.

My little frenchies are helpless love bugs who get crated when we leave LOL. I think that adds to my worry as well. Frenchies are so kind and love people (at least most do) and would be so willing to go with a stranger! And I was used to a dog who hated strangers who could defend herself fairly well against someone trying to take or hurt her. Frenchies are sitting ducks.

Hi there I'd just like to say that I understand completely how you feel, I would be devastated if my boy got stolen. I also have 2 rotties and they protect the house when we go out but they are both nearly 12 so I dread the day when they are no longer around.
