Hello,

I am still feeding my frenchie royal canine since that was the food they were feeding him. Recently a friend of mine recommended Merrick grain free lamb. Any feedback on this food?

Thank you,

I haven't used it, but Merrick is rated five stars on dogfoodadvisor website, and I have friends feeding it to their dogs who like it. You probably have read that we don't like Royal Canin too much so it should be a good switch. Do it gradually over a week. If your dog develops symptoms of allergies like licking paws or lots of ear scratching then try a different protein such as duck. If still having allergies, try a different brand such as Zignature, Fromm, Earthborne Holistic etc.

I personally feed my dog frozen raw because she was licking paws and scratching ears and shaking her head on everything but that. She was doing almost as good on dehydrated raw, but her ears are better on the frozen raw. The only dry kibble that wasn't too allergenic for her was Carna4 duck, which I think is only readily available in Canada, but even on that she had ear problems.

RC is not a high quality food so it is good that you are wanting to make a switch. A lot of brands that we tend to recommend and are fed, if you want to stick to kibble, is Fromm, Acana, Orijen, Zignature and Earthborn Holistics. All are top rated foods and there are others as well, this is just to name a few. Other options would be raw or a dehydrated raw like The Honest Kitchen or Grandma Lucy's.

Agree... RC is crap food.

Merrick is a good brand as well as all the others mentioned.

Raw is best if willing and able

I have never used Merrick but have heard it is good. It is a little high in protien and that's why I haven't used it. We feed FROMM grain free and have had good luck with it.

Hello,
Rocco has been doing ok with merrick grain free. I also ordered northwest naturals raw lamb recipe and he is doing good and likes the food. I also add at times coconut oil to his kibble. However, he poops sometimes 4-5 times and he also did this when he was on royal canine. Is there something I am doing wrong? I feed him twice a day, two small bowls(maybe like a cup) could that be the reason? He is 5 months and almost at 19lbs.

Normally he should be on 3 times a day feeding until 6 months of age, and then twice a day. If you are using puppy food you can try transitioning to an all stages adult dog food any time between 6 and 12 months of age. So I would first try giving smaller meals 3 times a day and see if that helps. Sometimes feeding too much gives soft poops, are you following recommendations on the bag? You can also try a different protein than the one you are using. Have you had your puppy tested for giardia?
