This is Isabelle this morning.
3 weeks post op.

I think her eye looks horrific.

She has a follow up appointment with the surgeon to discuss our concerns, but she's already had one follow up with him and we got a "SHE LOOKS FABULOUS"...

She alternates ointment and drops for her eye twice a day. Clearly they aren't doing anything.

Do any of you have any idea if this is normal? or have experienced this?

Thanks! :)

I don't know much about cherry eye problems but my Boston had emergency eye surgery 1 1/2 years ago and it doesn't look the same (looks like it's still healing up actually). From my experience eyes take a LONG time to heal up. I would continue the treatment and see if there is any change. It actually looks really good to me but I'm not doctor. :)

Also, her ears kill me!

Those are some really good looking ears as Squishy Walnuts said! And sorry, I don't have any experience with cherry eye but your baby is darling.

My boy had cheery eye and we did the surgery at about 5 mos. I think it was much more traumatic for me than him although that cone of shame was no fun at all. He'll be 2yrsSarge2.20.12.webp25weeks2.webp11.5mos.webp in 2 weeks and we have never had another problem :-D I had an eye surgeon do mine. That's all they do is eye surgeries on dogs (or cats). Did you have a specialist do it? The first picture is jut before the cherry eye popped out. The middle is several weeks after healing and the far right is him at 1 year. I have a photo of what the cherry eye looked like but it's on my phone and I'll try and see if I can send it to my computer. A cherry eye happens right in the corner.

Yes, she had cherry eye. This is 1 day before surgery.

This is about a week week & a half after surgery.

And as above, this is today.

At our vet Dr Boris is the one that does all the cherry eye surgeries, and saw her around the time of the 2nd picture and said she was healing great.

She doesn't look so hot to me.

That's why we scheduled another appt with him to ask him what the heck he's looking at because her eye looks worse and worse.

Thank you! Yes! Chance and Isa's ears do look just alike!

I keep hearing and reading how easy of a recovery and such it is too. Which is why there is more than obviously something wrong with her eye, IMO.

Gah, why me?! Haha!

Hmm. I hope you're right, but something is telling me that her eye isn't healing properly.

Haha I love her ears! They're so "batty".

Haha! Thanks! I told Isabelle everyone likes her ears and I got a grumble :P

Words of encouragement help too! :)

Looks like the third eyelid is still showing a bit, it could just be irritated. I hope so, let us know what the vet says.

She went to the ER vet the other night, it was a free of charge visit just to ease our concern until we could get in with the surgeon who did the procedure.
That vet looked in her eye, said there was swelling, but that there were no loose sutures, and there was nothing down in there irritating it.
She also said there wasn't another prolapse... but I feel like if there weren't stitches right now, that it would prolapse...

I'll update everyone later today!

Ahhhh, I can see it. It was better right after surgery. They make a little stitch that holds that third eye lid in place sometimes it slips back, We were told that it could happen again and I was worried because we don't know how it happened. At first it popped in and out on it's own. My breeder said she never had a cherry eye on a pup before but we also know it can happen through injury. (BTW, our breeder paid $500 of my $1800 surgery bill. Is your pup guaranteed through your breeder?). With all the other expenses Sergeant has brought to us I am so thankful his eye has not been any further trouble. It looks like the third eye lid has weakened further to me. It will be interesting to see what your vet says. If he tells you it's normal I'd look for a specialist and get a 2nd opinion.

He explained to us that they use the thinnest stitch, and it's a continuous stitch...

He saw her after surgery because we were concerned, and he said "she looks great" well since then? It's gotten worse. That lead us to the ER vet. Which is leading us to this (really 3rd) follow up with the surgeon.

If something went wrong I would just love to be told, instead of being beat around the bush and lied to.

He guaranteed her surgery, and said if her eye prolapses within 4 months after surgery, he would eat the bill. (Which, he would have a 2nd time whether he guaranteed it or not with my husband...)
If he says this is normal I am telling him off today. And I might even take it further than that, because just looking at her, this is NOT normal.

In our contract our breeder doesn't guarantee against cherry eye since it's "common with the breed". Isabelle's surgery was $507, and we have CareCredit.
I did text her and notify her, since I know it can be genetic, she said that she never had a puppy reported to her that had cherry eye, so maybe it's just my luck? So I told her that Isabelle had the surgery, and I just wanted to let her know? She literally replied "k" I was infuriated.
She has a lot of health problems, so I just figured it was a bad day, but you could have at least said "aw" or something.
It was just really rude, but that's a whole other story.

I felt like saying yeah sure when our breeder said she had never had a pup with cherry eye before but I didn't. I was pleased she gave us $500 toward the $1800. She did say she wished she could do more but that she didn't have more at that time. Cherry eye was not specifically "written out" of our agreement so I have a tendency to believe her because if she'd had experiences with cherry eye I am sure she would have upgraded her contract to exclude the cherry eye. Nothing was excluded in fact. She even offered me a new or 2nd puppy for nothing. I didn't want a 2nd one for sure and would have never given mine up after having him for about 3 mos at that point. She has stayed in contact and always tells me if I change my mind about a 2nd her offer stands. Best of luck to you today and I hope her eye will be fine!

Sounds like you found a great breeder!

Ours really worked with us considering we had a 6 hour round trip to get Isabelle.

She actually offered us a deal to make payments if we took 2 pups that day, for $4,000, we paid $3,200 for Isabelle. Probably should have took up that offer, but hey, greed could have put us in the hole. (especially with frenchies!)

Thanks for the luck. Her appt is at 3:40pm, so in about an hour.

I'll definitely update his thread with what the vet says, and if I have good or bad luck today.

Update:

Okay so he explained that even though sometimes it looks bad? That the fact that it looks good at times? Means that it's going to look good. He basically said only use drops now, & we have to ride it out & he can appreciate that we want to bring her in because when it looks bad it probably looks horrible. But we have to keep up with the drops and ride it out because there is waiting, or surgery, & surgery isn't an option yet.

I'll keep waiting... He seemed more considerate this time, and listened to what I had to say & to my concerns.

I'm glad to hear it's not as bad as you thought!

I'm also glad he listened to your concerns. Nothing worse than a vet who doesn't listen. Makes no sense to me since we're the ones paying them.

Keep us updated!

I got a more definite answer this time, last time he said she looked great, better than expected, and then got worse looking, which lead to this appt.

He said she needs to stay on her eye drops for 2-3 months, and that her sutures are dissolving around this time, and probably irritating it? So we want to keep drops in yo keep swelling from irritation minimal, because after all, the swelling of her 3rd eyelid got us into this mess to begin with!

I will update every so often. She got a drop this morning, and last night, her eye looks pretty good today!

Maybe it's a miracle and we won't have any more problems... (How's that for wishful thinking?)

I'm an expert at eye drops thanks to Uma. She almost lost her eye (melting cornea from an in-grown hair on her 3rd eyelid) and I recall giving drops for at least a month. Eyes are tricky. The hardest part was getting her not to play so rough while she healed.

I hope she heals up quick!

It looks good to me. It usually takes a month to so for the swelling to go down.

It'll be a month the 9th.

She's been on drops since 4 days before surgery.

I hope you're right!

Thanks!
