We are considering the adoption of a five year old male French Bulldog from a local shelter. We are familiar with the breed having had two previous Frenchies including our current two year old female. We have been looking for a companion for her for a few months and the meet and greet with this little guy went really well. The two dogs played until they dropped. Here’s my concern. The dog recently had surgery in both eyes for cherry eye which he was apparently born with. I do plan plan on consulting my vet but was wondering if anyone has had personal experience with this. The quick research I did linked the success of the surgery and any lingering issues with the length the dog had the condition among other things. In this case it was a long time (5 years). We’re not looking for the “perfect dog” but would like to understand the risks. I’ve enclosed a photo. You can see that the post-surgery redness is still apparent.

Cherry eye is really just cosmetic, but once surgery is done most I know of/have seen being an issue potentially is dry eye

Thank you so much for responding. We’ve decided to get him for better or for worse. We pick him up on Tuesday. I’ve already scheduled an appointment with my vet. Hopefully he will have a smooth recovery. I’m afraid he might have trouble getting adopted otherwise and he’s a very sweet boy. Plus, we’re no strangers to Frenchies and their health issues so we’ll just take as it comes.
