Hi all, my 13 month old has switched to raw about 1.5 months ago. Was doing great on it until this week, he became constipated, crying in pain trying to do a poo, pooing blood and eventually got a fever. Now the vet has told us the issue was that he was allergic to bone in the raw diet and that we need to put him on Royal Canine Gastrointestinal to rebalance his stomach. BUT I am so sick of this product that the vet keeps recommending I've tried it 4 times already and it never fixed his soft stool. The only thing that fixed his soft stool was the raw diet but now his stool is so hard its cutting his intestine. I'm at a loss and no idea what to do anymore. We go from one extreme to the other and never find a solution. I am going to ignore the vet and keep him on the raw diet but I will just reduce the bone ratio. But since his stomach is still very delicate I need a kibble to put him on instead of Gastrointestinal since I think the product doesn't work. Can anyone recommend something? I'm based in Italy by the way!

On a side note, his fever was caused by some sort of infection in his intestine which was a result of poo build-up. Fever has passed now with the antibiotics they injected him with but I am also giving him a course of antibiotics which I need to give him for about 8 days.

Longer term, say I do just 1 meal a day on raw and 1 meal a day on kibble, which kibble do you recommend?

I would not say he is allergic to the bone. Too much bone can cause constipation. Are you feeding a pre-made commercial brand?

I agree, the vet said "allergic" but I think it was too much bone. I am buying frozen BARF branded food at the local BARF store, but it isn't pre-mixed with anything. He's been eating minced rabbit which has little bits of rabit bone in there. He's also been on the beef which is just pure minced beef. However, I did start adding fish to the meals a few days ago and maybe went too heavy with those. So probably fish bones + the rabbit bones were just too much for him. But what worries me is the fever and if I have caused permanent damage to his intestines from this.

I don't have any kibble recommendations, but there are several threads around here that have recommendations, if you are interested in a hybrid diet.

Have you thought about just switching brands of raw to something with a lower bone percentage?

He is much better now, the Royal Canine has helped soften his stools so now we are back to half soft/half formed stools again. No more blood in the stools either although that only stopped yesterday. He's back to himself now, playing about super happy. Once we finish the bag of Royal Canine we will go back to raw but with less bone this time!
