every time my frenchie goes for a ride, she pukes...lol...she heaves and heaves then leaves a vomit....
how to stop that?
I have A LOT of experience with this one! We got Jax last June when he was just about 11 weeks. He was absolutely fine in the car. A few days later went for a car ride to the vet and he was fine. After that, well that's another story. Third car ride he puked everywhere and every time he was in the car after that he puked. Then, not only was he puking, he started drooling excessively, like a St. Bernard (another sign of car sickness). Now I think he gets anxiety just being in the car because every time we start walking towards the car, he puts the brakes on and does not want to go. I have tried a lot of different things and have read A LOT of articles on the internet and have talked to my vet.
I have read and have been told that car sickness is more common in puppies than with full grown dogs and that most (key word) will grow out of it as they get older. I have also read that it is less motion if the dog is sitting in the back vs. front and is high up to look out the windows but it is better if they are looking straight ahead vs. out the side windows. I have tried the back seat, I have tried the front seat, I have tried putting him directly on the seat as well as high up in a booster type seat. None of these made a difference. I have tried Dramamine (for long car rides) and it did work some of the time but not all of the time, Benadryl which did not work at all, and Happy Traveler which calmed him a bit where he wasn't drooling but he still threw up. I have heard you can give the dog some ginger or black licorice jelly beans but I have not tried either.
Some other tips to try is to make sure you have the window down so she gets the fresh air and do not feed her immediately before going in the car. Jax used to throw up even if it was a 5 minute car ride.
Here is where I am now. Jax has not recently thrown up in the car (knock on wood) and he just turned 1 a few weeks ago so maybe he is growing out of it. However, he still gets anxiety of going into the car and will shiver like he is scared for awhile. He also will drool for the first few minutes but if I have the window all the way down where he can really get that fresh air, then the drooling and shivering will stop after a few minutes. I am trying to "recondition" him so he can see that being in the car is not that bad.
Hope this wasn't too long of a post but this has been an ongoing struggle with me for quite awhile! I wish you luck!
