Hello everyone. I joined this group to get some help putting my mind at ease. Yesterday my Frenchie Bubbie died he was only 6 years old . Has any of you experienced a loss due to IVDD? I’m starting to think he died of a brain tumor. We took him to the emergency vet yesterday because something wasn’t right. He would just stand and not move. He was experiencing inconsistent and I thought he was choking but now I think he was actually having a seizure. All his vitals were normal. X-ray showed heart and lungs were fine. No sign of cancer anywhere but she said there was something wrong with vertebrae #10. Vet said she would send him home with prednisone and pain medication. Not even 10 minutes later the tech came in and said my boy went into cardiac arrest and if we wanted them to resuscitate him we said yes. The vet came in 20 minutes later and told us he didn’t make it. I’m at a loss.

Poor doggo. Rip. Sorry for your loss. I would imagine if they did a full body scan, they would have seen the brain tumor tho.

So sorry for your loss. My male had a herniated disc this time last year that required surgery, it’s awful seeing them suffer.

First off how utterly heart breaking. I wouldn't image his death be linked to the irregular vertebrae. In all honesty Frenchies have irregular vertebrae just because of how they have been bred, and not all irregular vertebrae mean they have IVDD as its a disc condition and not actually a vertebral condition. if he had a slipped disc, you would have seen signs like panting, shaking sometimes crying and maybe gate issues if the disc was pushing on the spinal cord and there was inflammation there. Do you know if they gave him any Acepromazine this is normally used as a sedative so procedures can be performed. the issue with this is unless the vets is very experienced with ace and frenchies. They (the vet) can OD the dog on the ace which leads to a drop in BP that leads to cardiac arrest. I think i would ask for his vet notes and see what medications were given and also unless they had him on continuous BP machine they wouldn't have noticed his BP dropped until he started having issues. not saying it was the vets fault or that this is what happened, but it could have been. We know something was going on beforehand but with the intial assessment of vitals all good heart and lungs good you dont just have sudden cardiac arrest with good vitals.

So very sorry for your loss. It sounds like a brain tumor… but only sure way of knowing is through a necropsy

I wanted to have a necropsy done but was told that we wouldn’t get his remains back. So I decided not too to it.

He was given 2.5 mg Butorphanol to sedate him but my husband expressed his concern to the emergency vet that prior to us bringing him in we had given him Gabapentin. She said that was fine but an hour later he goes into cardiac arrest and then she gave him an injection of a medication to reverse the Butorphanol. To add insult to injury they changed us $171 to proform CPR and $70 for the reversal medication. I was shocked. We said our good bye to our boy. I just wanted to get the heck out of there. Yes we brought him there because he wasn’t feeling good but we done this before. What I have noticed is these vets aren’t familiar with the breed.

I hate this so much for you and your family. a lot of vets are familiar with the breed. People give me grief because I travel 2.5 hours away to a MedVet hospital for any of my dogs specialty needs and only utilize our vet close to home for basic things such as allergy meds and yearly check ups. we lost our Boston terrier to years ago at an ER Vet and they charge an absurd amount for CPR and the meds, Dont get me wrong I know those things cost money but I am nurse and the hospital dont even charge that much for chest compressions.

I told the why should I pay for the reversal medication or the CPR because he died because of the sedative. I know I was angry and lashing out. We did bring him in because he wasn’t feeling well but the fact that he didn’t come back home with us. I got the call this morning that his ashes were ready for pick up. He’s coming home to where he belongs. His first 2 years of life wasn’t ideal I got him from my brother, my sister in law hates dogs. He spent 1 year living outside because she didn’t want him in their new house. He died knowing he was very much loved 💕
