I have a 10 month old Frenchie who is just the sweetest ball of energy. I got him in September so this is his first summer. I have read everything about overheating and have now totally freaked myself out. He is just so energetic and has no off switch. We live in WI so it hasn't been too hot but he gets so excited when we're on walks and then starts panting. It sounds like he has some phlegm but he shows no other signs of distress, though did gag once but it didn't seem to effect him much. He asks to go out again as soon as we get home. We don't even go for that long and we never had this problem until this last month. He loves playing with other people and dogs. I just don't know how much is too much. I don't want to deprive him but I don't want to put him at risk either. Any advice on realistically raising a happy, healthy Frenchie and calming my anxiety would be much appreciated.

I have no knowledge on this but when I look at my pup I know he's ready to overheat in a few. Then I decide play time is over. Usually by looking at his eyes though and he's pretty dark but I can see around his eyes are red and his panting is just too much. I do suggest buying a cooling pad if you will be under the sun, it helps a lot.

Yeah I second the cooling pad . Try a misting spray bottle and carry lots of water and a travel bowl. Also teach your pup to calm down and take breaks in the shade it will go a long way in keeping your pup safe in the heat

This little guy sounds like a silly little goose. You people with puppies, God bless you! :D Nothing cuter, however.

I would walk him in the cool of the morning and when temps get too hot or humid, you may have to forego your walks for several months. Maybe you can engage him in backyard play to include a kiddie pool. A lot of the frenchies here love water (Bambi does not, although she was never exposed to it). You will know when he starts to get hot.

Early morning walks and wading in a lake or stream is how we keep our cool here in NE Oregon. We also have a wading pool for the pups!

Any tips on helping him calm down?

^^^ I just put his leash back on, then he knows his actions are very limited and just be near me. It just depends, I've seen some owners they tell their frenchies to sit and stay. I've noticed when I go to frenchie meet ups, when they are tired they all just lay down.

Yeah I just train him to calm down it might take a couple commands but he will calm down pretty quick

Early morning or late evening walks are best, and not too long. When he starts to pant, it's time to pick him up and go home. They do love the outdoors, but you just have to limit the time outside when it is hat out.

Wiping their belly and chest with a wet cool cloth will help them cool down significantly.

My Stella would go until she drops with fetch, so when she gets too tired the game simply stops. We are also mindful of the temperature when we walk ours. Never when it is too hot. Panting too much can cause their palate, tongue and throat to swell and can be very dangerous.

:welcome3: to FBN .... gang gave great advice... good luck
