Hi all,

I have a almost 7 month old intact male frenchie named Lil’ Louie and about a month ago we noticed that when he would drink too fast , sometimes after eating , burping or playing with his toys he would gag. Just the one sound , sometimes would bring up some water , once regurgitated his food . He does not breath with an open mouth, does not have any exercise intolerance , eats well , and over all is a normal happy puppy. The only other thing that concerns me is that at night when he’s relaxing and trying to sleep with me on the couch he seems unsettled unless he can have his head resting on somthing . He will get up and reposition. Himself multiple times , sometimes just stands there dazed .Even does this on long car rides ( wants to rest it on the glove box) . When he’s out in his crate with his bed though he seems settled and content ( though that could be because his bed has raised edges that he can rest his head on) . He does have somewhat noisy breathing during sleep and is a bit snorty during the day but is never gasping for air , gums and tongue are always nice and pink. I had a consultation booked with a specialist but canceled as I felt I was over reacting and would want to wait until he’s fully grown to think about assessing him and doing the surgery if necessary. Anyone have any insight to this ? Am I being paranoid ? Someone help my brain relax lol

Hi and welcome… not being paranoid… have him evaluated and see if the vet get is necessary to address now or can it wait till he is a little older. There is no age limit to when this procedure is needed it is more around the severity of each situation

Thanks for your reply and making me feel like I’m not crazy! I guess what’s concerning me the most (lately) is the weird thing with him sleeping. Like I mentioned in my post, he sleeps fine when he’s not with me and in his crate but it’s just the unsettling outside of it . Do you think this is BOAS related? Or just weird puppy behaviour?

Resting his head to elevate his throat helps to open the airways. If he doing that it’s a good chance he has an elongated palate.

It’s so strange though , this only started about a month ago .. I know he’s still growing and changing but you would think he’d have had some of these signs before.

Not necessarily, the palate is soft tissue so it grows as they do, it’s one reason many vets will wait to do the surgery till around 1-2 years depending on severity

ahh , ok well that makes sense. Just seemed so sudden . I appreciate the info :)

Good luck! Keep us posted.

I’ve been through it a few times at all different ages . Sadly it is common
Yah , I can see that it is a very common thing amongst brachycephalic breeds . I got spoiled with my first she luckily didn’t have those issues . I had my boy examined at my reg vet and he thinks he has a very thick tongue for his bone structure ( when opening his mouth cannot see the back of his throat) he wants to wait a few more months to see if his head will get larger to accommodate it. I’ll be watching him closely for now and if anything worsens I’ll have him evaluated with the surgeon . Luckily for now for the most part he’s ok in his day to day.

Yes… limit outside activities during hot days, like anything over 70-75 and when sleeping watch for apnea. You got this

Yes I definitely will. I’ve decided to rebook with the surgeon to see what they say , just can’t shake this nagging feeling so I’ll be having him assessed on April 27.
