Sorry for the gross thread subject!

Otto is 18 weeks old and just wrapping up his first week with us. So far, things are going really well! We went to the vet on Friday and he weighed in at 23.8 pounds(!) so the doc told us to drop down to feeding twice a day, 1/2C each time. I am curious to know, how long after eating does your frenchie go #2?

So far our morning schedule looks like this:
6:30 - wake up, go out side: pee and poop
6:35- come inside for breakfast and go in to the crate to rest while I work out.
7:30- back outside...just pee, walk around a lot but no pooping
9: back out, pee for sure, might poop
We continue to go out every couple of hours and he will normally poo 3-4 hours after eating.

My concern is this: I am going back to work this week and won't be able to take him out super frequently. He will be in his crate while we're at work and my husband will come home for lunch to let him out for the bathroom and a little play time before going back in for the rest of the work day. I really don't want him to go in his crate and be stuck next to it for an hour +!

Also, he eats his dinner around 5/5:30 and will then poop around 8:30.

Is it normal that it takes him a few hours?

I think the frequency and amount a puppy poops varies greatly depending on what they are eating and how active they are.

If your pup is making it through the night without having an accident, I would think he would be perfectly fine holding it while you are at work, with a mid day break. Generally, they don't have the urge to go as much when they aren't active. As long as his crate isn't too large, he will want to keep it clean. Also, once he gets used to the new schedule, he will know that he should get his business done during his midday break.

A short walk before you leave him for a several hours might also get things moving along.

Best of luck! He is just darling! :)

Congrats on your pup and holy cow, 23 pounds already?? He's going to be a big boy. The schedule you have him on sounds about right. AS long as you can let him out at lunch he should be fine. He may have a mistake once in awhile, but he will get used to this schedule. Our 4 month old pup will poop about 3 to 4 hours after he eats so you are doing things right. Just curious are you overseas? As their Frenchies are a bit larger than the Frenchies here in the states. In conformation a Frenchie over 28 pounds is an automatic DQ, but if you are here and you aren't showing, it doesn't matter. As long as you love him that's all that matters. :)

Thanks so much for the reassurance! We are actually in TX, but supposedly he does have Hungarian bloodlines- whatever that means. He actually belonged to a neighbor until last week but he was too much work for them with another dog, a child and full time jobs, so we took him in. I actually lost my beautiful 11 year old Boxer in early August so little Otto is just what my lonely heart was needing. I love how playful and affectionate he is and feel like he is the perfect addition to our family! We won't be showing him, so no worried about conformation- I actually think his color would DQ him, I believe he is "mouse"?

Also, we will be getting him neutered next week. He has an un-descended testicle so the vet said he should never be bred under any circumstances (not my thing, anyway) and since he is already so big, she felt that the sooner we went ahead with the neuter, the better to avoid any testosterone related behavioral issues.

You shouldn't neuter before 6 months.

Otto is a cutie, and looks like the perfect treatment for a lonely heart.

I would get a second opinion regarding the neuter. Gus is almost 6 months old and has had no signs of "testosterone related behavior issues." I think they hit puberty closer to around 8 months, but I'm no expert. I'm trying to hold off closer to that time to neuter Gus.

Although, I know when exactly to neuter is a personal decision, 18-19 weeks sounds extremely young. I'd be worried that neutering that young could affect their bone growth. As long as complications related to the undecended testicle aren't an immediate concern, I'd do more research before going ahead with the neuter.

Best of luck

What a cutie pie!! :welcome3: to FBN!

As others have stated... you are on a great schedule and the lunch time potty break is prefect. At 5 months old.. 6 hours is the limit.. so don't push that.

Thanks everyone for the great insight! This morning was wonderful - no accidents in the crate overnight, then up at 6:30 for a trip out where we had success in #1 and #2. Then back in for breakfast and a little play time. I did let him stay in the bathroom with me as I got ready for work because I felt bad about putting him in to his crate only to let him out before I left and then right back in again. So he played in the bathroom with his toys getting lots of "good boys!" and pets from me when he was sitting nicely and would chew his toy rather than try to nip at my feet! Then we went out for a brisk walk before I went to work where he peed and pooped then back in to go in his crate at 8am with two toys until my husband comes home for lunch. I am feeling very positive right now about our progress and hopeful that we won't have an accident today in the crate - fingers crossed!

Tonight we start puppy kindergarten and I am looking forward to getting him socialized around other dogs and also having some exercises for us to work on together throughout the week. We decided to postpone the neuter for now because it does seem terribly young. I discussed with my vet and she felt find about revisiting the topic in another month. I will watch him closely and hold out as long as we can.

Thank you, everyone for the kind words!
