Let me first start by saying a Frenchie is a unique breed and by that I've found mine has been more difficult to train. Penelope is 8 months old and I left her alone in the house for 15 minutes to test her. Guess what I found when I returned? Poop in our family room. We've raised English springers and Shih tzu puppies who were already trained to where we could leave them out of their crates while we left.
So at what age have you been able to leave your frenchie alone and out of crate? Has there been any upsets when leaving them alone?

I have two frenchies, 2 year old and 11 months old. In Finland crating is illegal, so we don't do that at all. Our guys has been roaming free since we brought them home. House training can take some time especially with bulldog breeds. Some individuals pick it up easy and for some it will take time. Our 2 year old got the drift by he was 4 months old, the younger one still has occasional accidents inside. We try to be persistent. if we find accident, just keep calm and clean. Each time he does go out for potty we praise him and give treats. Eventually he will get it and wait till going out and expect to get a treat :)

It all depends on the dog

Aiko is 7 months and we actually had to go back to crate training. We stopped because she was getting the hang of potty training but then we moved and she basically went back to puppy mode and all new things learned were lost. so she is crated when we are not around. as soon as she can be trusted alone she will have free range. Just keep your head up and be consistent and she will get it!!!!!!!!!!

It really does depend on the individual dog. Wally was a year old when we let him roam free with our other, older dog. He never had any accidents or problems.

We always crate ours when we are gone, it's safer that way, and keeps them out of trouble. We have on occasion left one out every once in awhile, and they will do fine until one day they decide to so something bad, so we just crate them and no problems.

Maple was only ever crated when we were gone for more than 2 hours and only until she was about 7 months old. We never had any issues after we stopped crating. I think its important for the pup to be used to a kennel, because most shelters/ boarding places do kennel and if your dog ever needs to stay there, it'd be good if they are already used to being kenneled. That said, I personally dont like to have my dog kenneled, so my dogs will always roam free inside my house when I trust them.

My guys are always crated when we are not home... I trust them in regards to potty, but it is more for their safety

Jake was left out to roam free at about 10 months of age. Stella and Jake just sleep in their beds when we are gone. I won't leave them longer than 4 hours though. Jake will use a dog door that goes to a small sideyard that has fake grass if he needs to go out.

Banksy will always be crated when I'm gone for safety reasons.

Hudson was crated when we were gone until he was about a year old. Henri has free roam now (he's 17 weeks). He's a WAY different type of puppy than Hudson was and is just an all around easy creature. We got him to keep Hudson company and he behaves himself so I like them to be out together. They sleep the entire time we are gone though, haha.

I didn't crate train Jax. When he was young I kept him in an xpen in the kitchen. Now he gets confined in the kitchen. If we are gone for just a short period of time, then he gets free roam of the upstairs (all bedroom/bathroom doors closed). I'm pretty sure he just sleeps the whole time he is alone.

Cbrugs if you didn't crate train, care to share your tips on how you potty trained Jax? I am still undecided about crate training. It's been so hard for me to lock my Nellie up in a crate when am gone! I'm being such a wuss about it lol. If some of you have been successful at potty training without a crate I'd love to know how. Thanks

I lucked out in that we got Jax at the beginning of summer so my son and stepdaughter were out of school and home with him so they were able to take him out. By the time school started again, he was potty trained.
