Hi all,
Little man Remy has almost completely mastered potty training at home (only 2 small pee accidents in 2 months). I'm really proud of him! However...he has never gone outside of his spot at home. We have been out the better part of a day and he holds it the entire time. I'm not sure if it's the leash or just because we are out? I get worried because I know he must need to go. He pretty much goes everywhere with me and we are going to start traveling more. I'm worried about regression being away from the home. He is almost 7 months, we have had him since 4 months. We do positive reinforcement with treats and I always take them with me. He has never gone on grass either for that matter. He prefers the DG (tiny rock like ground cover) we have in our backyard. Any advice?

Are you pairing the behavior with a word/phrase, like "go potty?"

I trained Gus to go in the natural area in our backyard, rather than the grass, and when he was little and when we were on walks, he would seek out these natural areas to go, as well. This was not very convenient for me. Lol
He eventually got over it, with some reinforcement (praise). Unfortunately, this carried over to our backyard, as well, and he killed the grass in a couple areas. Heh

I would just make sure you are using a "go potty" type command and give him plenty of opportunity to practice going in his normal spot on a leash and also in different spots than his normal area. Can you take him somewhere first thing in the morning that doesn't have the little rocks? If his bladder is really full and you are giving the command, I think he will get it with just a little practice. Of course, be sure to give him lots of praise when he finally does. :)

I agree with making an association with the word "potty" when he does his business. My puppy learned what that means and it certainly helps. If he goes on pads inside, try bringing a pad outside and getting him to go on it in different areas. Tons of praise and/or treats along with the word "potty" when he goes when you want him to. These guys can be stubborn, it took my boy around 6 months to stop having accidents inside.

No pads. He is completely potty trained at home. He just won't go anywhere other than our backyard. He knows what potty means pretty well I think. It's the command we use and he does his business pretty promptly. I guess at least I know he can hold it well lol. There should be no reason for further accidents lol. I'm going to try leasing him at home and see if that helps him learn? Normally he just goes right out to the same spot each time.

Good luck! He'll get the idea, it may just take some extra practice. :)
