I get to bring sweet baby chowder tomorrow,

he is a total cry baby and so cute :) breeder told us that he is TINY and that he often got pushed out of the feeding tray due to his size.

when he comes home i want him to get comfortable in his crate and his ex pen area see below.

during hte night i want him to sleep in the living room (while we sleep in our bedroom)
so my question is what are some things we can do to help him get settled and not cry all night. should we bring him inside our room and just take him out every 2 hours to his ex pen *where he will pee until he has all his shots*

any help would be awesome thank you so much!

When we brought Jake home we had a similar set up but he was in the kitchen. I bought him one of those Snuggle Puppies that has a simulated heartbeat. He did fine, but he is a super laid back dog as well. We also left a night lite on for him so he was not in pitch black darkness. I think it is important for a puppy to have "their space" and get used to it. We put a pee pad in the area that Jake slept and left the crate door open so he could relieve himself. Once daylight broke we were up and immediately took him outside to his outdoor potty place. We kept a container of treats out there as well to praise him. Once he got older and could hold his urine longer, we eliminated the pee pads. Good luck and enjoy your new baby. Post some pics so we can see your cutie.

Tony,

Dogs and especially Frenchies are PACK animals and NEED their pack. Putting Chowder in the living room is going to envoke crying and whining and possibly howling because he will be ALONE for the first time and being alone go against all of his natural instincts. If it's possible you it would be better to put the crate in your bedroom so he knows you are there with him. Yes, being away from his pack he is going to cry no matter what unless he's next to you or another dog while sleeping. The litters sleep on one another so being away from his brothers and sisters and in a metal crate alone will be scary for him.

I wanted to crate Batman and Ollie. I made it three weeks with Ollie and then the sleep deprivation got to me and in the bed he went. Batman he was in the crate 4 days and then in the bed with us. I'm a trainer and I would love them to sleep in their own beds, but I work fulltime and need my sleep so if it means I get 6-7 hours with them in the bed versus getting up 3 times a night I take the sleep and the dogs in the bed everytime. LOL

But everyone is different and I respect you may not want the dogs in the bed. But I would put the crate in a room with someone else or another dog if you have one so Chowder is not alone. It will be harder for him if he is alone. Hes going to cry in both cases, so be ready for some sleepless nights. :)

When we first brought Jax home he slept in an ex pen in the kitchen with a bed on one side and a pee pad on the other. We always left a little light on for him so he wasn't in the pitch black and waited for him to be tired before putting him in. He only used the pee pad the first couple of nights and then was able to hold it. This was the routine from mid-June through the end of August and he has been in the bed with us ever since. We totally failed at crate training. I love having him sleep in the bed with us, he gives good cuddles!

I totally agree. Ollie and Batty love to cuddle. Batty climbs up on my neck and head on my pillow and curls around me. He's so cute!

what an awesome set up!! I think you shoudl try to set this up in the bedroom if you can... Frenchies LOVE to be with their humans so being seperated may make it worse for all of you

On the contrary, it CAN be done if you're willing to lose a couple nights' sleep.
Bear cried for the first 4 nights, and now he only cries when he has to pee (and his endurance will only strengthen).
He sleeps in a crate in our living room, within earshot of us.
Ensure that he is exhausted at bed time, and he may cry for a few minutes, but he'll eventually settle in and come to terms with his nighttime location.

hi guys! day 1 update ::

chowder is in the living room and is doing great. HE LOVES HIS CRATE. he slept from 1:30 am - 6am this morning not a single cry. *would've slept earlier but we got home after picking him up @ 1:00

also hes taken 2-3 naps already. Hes pooping and peeing strictly on pads and artificial grass we set up. He had a couple accidents but no biggie. Hes doing well in his ex-pen.

night 2 comes today and hopefully he will be good again.

quick question ::: vet checked him out and said he was all good. he weight in @ 3.5 lb's at 8weeks (hes a tiny cutie)
is it normal that he pees / poo's almost right after he eats/drinks? let me know.

thank you guys

So happy he is doing well, and he is a tiny boy for sure. Yes it is normal to pee and poop after eating. They will also need to pee after play and when they wake up from a nap. Make sure he gets plenty of sleep the next month or so. He is such a little doll.

Thank you David. He's getting so much sleep. He's been such a good boy so far. The only time he will whine is when he is hungry or he sees us in the living room and he's still locked up in his ex-pen.
I think he's too young still to be treat driven, we tried basic commands it just flew right over his head. We'll be attending kindergarten next weekend so hopefully he will get plenty of commands :)

Yes, its a puppy rule that right after nap time is PEE PEE time! Alwasy take outside right after naps! :)

And right after playing! The majority of Jax's accidents happened right after playing.

Tony - Don't expect to much from the puppy kindergarden class. I am a trainer and those classes are meant for YOU not the puppy. He is too little and too distracted to learn anything in those classes. It's more for socialization than anything else. YOU however will gain great knowledge and CAN use the information to TEACH him at home in the quiet non-distracting home environment. I always tell my students don't expect your dog to learn HERE. They learn during the homework phase of the class which is each daytime session with you. Puppies especially 8-12 weeks will learn basic stuff at home, but don't expect them to perform in class. It will be few and far between to find a pup that can and will do the commands in the classroom setting with all the other dogs present. When you practice at home limit the practice sessions to 5 mins each. His attention span won't go longer than that. You shoud also be teaching manners right away. No biting, no jumping, sit for meals. Simple stuff will help establish you as his leader and set you up for success! Enjoy!

Julie thank you so much for your input.
yes the biggest thing i've been struggling with putting so much expectations for little chowder. I gotta realize he is a puppy and he doesnt know any better.
Chowder is showing good signs, he does nibble and bite a bit too hard @ times but i just immediately yelp and tell him no. we've gotten him to get used to sitting before every meal, and we feed him inside his crate to get him comfortable.

so far sleeping at night has been good, we'll just get him super tired and he'll just go straight into his crate and sleep till the sun comes up. Of course using the snuggle puppy with a warm heat pack helps too.

thanks to everyone for your help!

Sounds like things are going well. I'm having fun following him on ig. He's sooo cute. How is the giridia coming along? Any better? I can't spell to save my life
