I think everybody on here now knows that I feed a raw diet. However going through older forum posts I noticed nobody had really mentioned how they are keeping their dogs kibble.
Some of you may know what I am about to say but for the ones who dont I am making this thread :
Ok so here we go :
Since kibble is highly processed and cooked at high temperature all vitamins and fats are destroyed. Since AAFCO has requirements about such ,kibble manufacturers spray minerals, vitamins etc on to the kibble before packing it into bags.
Now to preserve these nutrients they use antioxidants called Tocopherols. (Make sure your food doesnt use BHT or BHA for preservatives). So the Toccopherol is like a shield protecting the nutrients in the kibble. The only problem is,that oxygen oxidizes the Tocopherols, meaning the shield starts breaking apart. Especially Omega 3 fatty acids are super sensitive and get damaged really fast.
So the more oxygen gets to the food the more nutrients are being destroyed. This is why we recommend buying smaller bags and using the whole bag within 40 days. This is also why its super important to seal the bag after every time you use it. Dont just let it sit open.
Some people use kibble containers. If you do,dont fill the kibble in there. Everytime you open the container air gets in it and then when you close it the air stays in it and breaks down the nutrients. Furthermore if you dont clean the inside of the container on a regular basis molds can and likely will grow on the inside and these molds and salmonella etc will effect all other kibble that goes inside this container.
Oxygen in kibble causes
- Oxidation of fats
- Degradation of all micronutrients
- Molds & mycotoxins.
So if you feed kibble leave it in the bag, push all the air out after you used it,seal it and then put it(the bag) in the container. And remember dont use the same bag of kibble for more than 40 days.
