Neutering age?

Hi all -- touring "pet hotels" and learning about their policies for unfixed males has me thinking about the usual timeframe for neutering frenchies. Our specialized bulldog vet said he usually recommends neutering between 1 and 1.5 years, behavior allowing.

Hudson is a little over 6 months and has never humped, doesn't mark, doesn't lift his leg, and doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body. I'm hoping his behavior stays this way so we can wait until the recommended neutering time.

What have your vets said and what choices did you make? When did your male Frenchie realize that he was a boy? (Mine hasn't yet haha).

I have never asked our vet about a Frenchie, but he also recommends English be neutered around 18 months of age. Plus Henri is my first male Frenchie, so I will find out soon enough how it goes with him.

Some breeders sell their pups on non breeding contract and require the dog to be neuteured once 6 months old. But this is way too early! To avoid problems in the future you should neuter as late as possible but definitely not under 14 months. Reason being is that the growth plates havent fully developed yet and once the dog is neutered he stops producing hormones that are responsible for the bone development so the growth plates may never fully close and this will give you major problems in the future.

Our breeder told us that if we "have to do it", 14 months should be the earliest age.

But I have noticed that quite a lot of doggie-daycamp and boarding facilities require the procedure at a much earlier age, for good reason I am sure.
Although there really isn't much that a frenchie can mount lol.

One of the places I toured today told me he couldn't come in contact with a single other dog because he could impregnate one. Kind of made me laugh knowing frenchies are mostly artificially inseminated due to their "shortcomings." Thanks guys!! My favorite one had a policy of 10 months so I guess he'll be going there until then and after he'll go to friends. I don't want to mess with him before 14 months now! Thank you all!
