Hello friends! hope everyone is having a blessed night.

My name is Tony this is my first formal post and im excited to have opened the door of this world, to get to know you guys, and learn and share :) *excude my grammar im typing this in bed with the laptop on my stomach haha.

I will be bringing home Chowder a 8 week old frenchie in 4 weeks, And i need your input and your help.

I currently live in Koreatown, California (central Los Angeles right in the middle) in an apartment. I got chowder a ex-pen, and will crate him forsure to make sure he will be okay when he will be alone etc.

My biggest question and problem is Chowder will come in with 2 set of vaccinations already done, and will have to have his third one 2 weeks after he comes home to me. I really want to potty train chowder to release outside, but i dont want to risk the chance of him contacting Parvo. Am i just being a very crazy cautious owner or should i just let him pee on a grass pad in his ex-pen till he gets his full vaccinations done?

Can i have him to go on an artificial grass pad (with pee pads underneath to absorb liquids) then when he is fully vaccinated start potty train him to go outside?

And same issue with socializing him what should i do? Also what is a good time for us to fully let him out of the expen at all times?

thank you! any help would be greatly appreciated

:hiya: and :welcome3:

It is fine toi use the training pads till he gets the parvo shot.. it is only a few weeks and then you can begin the outdoor traing. No socialization till all shots are done -- just not worth the risk. Out of the x-pen full time, will be a year maybe longer. My guy is 3 yrs old and still can not be fully trusted if we are not at home.... he is too curious and likes to explore

Welcome Tony and Chowder!

Use the potty pads at first like 2bullymama said; and don't socialize until rabies vaccine. Buster potty transitioned to going inside on pads to going outside easily. When they start playing with and shredding the potty pads it is time to get rid of them.

Welcome! Definitely wait until he is fully vaccinated before he socializes with other dogs. Jax started tearing up the pee pads after a few days and was able to hold it through the night pretty early on (we got him at almost 11 weeks). He turned 1 in April and he does not and will probably never get free run of the house. When he was younger, we kept in an ex pen in the kitchen when he was home alone. Now he is confined to the whole kitchen. He has never been big on the crate so we rarely use it.

ahh perfect. So what ill do is in the expen, we will put chowders crate there (for bed etc.) and a pee pad directly across from it. Or should i just lay the whole expen area with newspaper? I would love to take a week off from work but ill be able to check on him only during lunch hours. :(

Unless you have a lot of dogs going potty and running in the yard you'll be walking your dog in the risk would be low he'd catch a thing. No Petco, no dog park and no running with other animals until he's fully vaccinated. I don't allow my dog to do those things anyway. I assume most of the dogs that potty around yours are house pets and if you bought a Frenchie you live in a neighborhood where most people are like yourself and responsible so their pets are probably healthy and vaccinated. Your pup is partially vaccinated so he's partially immune to most of those diseases just as he was for the first few weeks after he was born from his Mother. Send PICs, I just love Frenchie pup PICs. Congrats!! PS: Is he a cream, is that how he got his name Chowder?????

What I did was put a bed on one side of the ex pen and then a pee pad at the other side. He slept at night like this for about 2 1/2 months and only had a pee pad with him for a couple of weeks and it was only wet in the morning the first few nights. After the 2 1/2 months, he started sleeping in the bed with us.

I would say just let him go inside for know and don't socialize until after his last shots.

Hi Kris glad you saw our baby chowder:) thank you for the input. Koreatown is a very racial and economically diverse place. I see people walk dogs every morning, and i would see poop just left there. I live in the city so i dont have a front yard or anything i step outside its the sidewalk with a small grass patch. It seems like most dogs that gets walked around here are house pets, but with such dense population in this small city its tough to know if they've been taken care of and vaccinated.

this is a picture of the front of my building. Hopefully with more insight from our breeeder, and the local vet we can come up with a good plan to get this all figured out.

Im leaning on just having him confined to his expen till 10 weeks (when he will get his 3rd parvo shot) then transitioning him into his outside potty training. I just hope there will be time for him to learn :) View attachment 3184
I buy 4 gal plastic bags from The Dollar Store. You get 50 for $1 (much more economical than pet poop bags.) You'll leash him to walk him and that's all he gets to do outside til he's potty trained. You taxi them (which means carry) them to the grass spot , set them down allow them to pee pee and if you just fed he may need to poop. Then you pick him up and Taxi him right back up into the house. When my dog was a new pup he had food to eat all the time so he pooped every time we took him out. In the beginning he was walked every 20-30 mins. You won't be able to do that cuz you work so he'll be penned and won't pee pee in his pen. Male dogs are so very easy to house break. Don't let him think that outside is for anything other than potty for a few months and he'll get it and that grass in the front of your place is perfect and just slip your hand inside the clean bag, pick up the poo and then turn the bag back inside out capturing the poo and your yard will stay clean. We have a fenced yard and still walk him on a leash to poo and pick it up in the plastic bags so the yard is always clean. I let him go out and pee pee by himself but he's called right back in and not allowed to run through the dirty shrubs and Ivy. Our dog has allergies too so grasses and dust and dirt are a problem. He's happy. We play fetch inside and he loves tug o war. I'll hope your pup has no allergies and he'll grow to go outside and romp. Your neighborhood looks very nice and I am sure Chowder will do fine with whatever you decide is right for his house breaking routine. Remember when you do decide to start outside training the "Taxi" part is a very important part of the training process. Best Wishes!!

Hello and congratulations on the addition of family member Chowder. I've been tossing around the idea of posting something very similar and I hope the responses we get from the members helps us.

I brought home 8 week old Frenchie Quella La Roux and because I live in a townhome, there are tons of common areas used by others and their 4 legged friends (as well as 'outdoor' cats), I knew I wouldn't be taking her out every hour or so to familiarize her with the areas and to go pee pee/poo poo until she was fully vaccinated. So from 04/02 until 05/14, she was strictly an indoor dog and would only go outside when being carried or in her stroller to the car to make it to vets appointments or car rides to get fast food.

Now that she is vaccinated, I'm so beyond happy to see her utilize the leash skills taught while on lock down as well as interact with other dogs and children. Well, in the past 2.5 weeks, she has not went pee or poo outside once. She hasn't even considered it by doing the oh so well-known circle dance. :walk:

Because Quella is only using her potty pads 80% of the time, she does not have free reign of the house yet. I have an x-pen in my office/loft and another in the living room where she goes on the potty pads usually. I would love ideas on how to teach her to go to the bathroom on our walks. I always have treats in my pocket in case she does 'go' so I can reward her like crazy. I've tried taking out the potty pad (and hoping she'd hold it) and taking her outside every hour but she'll either pee on the floor or wait until we get back from the walk to use her potty pad.

:hijacked: Thanks for letting me heist your post... I figured we will get some responses on how to potty train your pup when they don't go outside because they're not fully vaccinated. And if you failed, like me to housetrain the dog, can you fix the damage done and train them that going outside is a good thing. :ponder:

If you are at home anyway, maybe some short-term close confinement would help. If she's in her crate for 30 minutes without a place to 'go', she'll likely have to go when you take her out, giving you a chance to reward her.

Bump.

Q-Roux is now 5.5 months old and still has never went pee or poo outside. I've tried crating her and bringing her outside every 10-20 mins for 2-5 mins and if she doesnt go potty, she goes back in to her crate. Well after being in it from 10pm to 7am, then potty breaks and not going, around 4-6pm she goes pee in the crate or on the floor the moment I turn my back. She even tries to go poo, so I rush her outside, she stands there, we come back inside, she tries to poo again and this happens over and over again until she literally just poos herself in the house. I'm out of options and would love suggestions on getting her to go potty outside. She only has access when I physically escort her out and she is on her leash. Unfortunately no doggy door (I have a Bengal) and no yard for her to be let out to roam freely. I'll be honest, puppy pads are so easy to manage but she needs to be able to relieve herself outside after holding it for 18ish hours (because she's too bulheaded to go outside). I feel like I'm punishing her with this method after several weeks.

XoXo from Quella La Roux and her mommy too!

Good advice from everyone! Better to be safe than sorry. We also do not let our Frenchies have run of the house when there is no one home. Too many things they can get into, even if you think they won't get into it, believe me, Frenchies are the most curious little creatures I have ever seen and they WILL get into something. :) Best to keep them in their "safe area" when no one is home (the x-pen for you I would assume).
