I am a first time dog owner so I am inexperienced in all areas EXCEPT showing the love for my Frenchie. We have had Deuce for 1month. The breeder gave me the potty schedule he used for all of his puppies in addition to food he feeds, etc. well, as I have read the books, and received info from trainers, it turns out that the old routine does NOT work as a pet. I have been feeling out of control. I will take him out to potty and he may or may not do his business. Even if he does he may go inside within a short period . Deuce loves to play outside ( the breeder said he would "let the puppies outside" for about 20-30 mins...but check on them). Sooooo I think Deuce associates outside with play time. When he goes to the door I let him out. It may be for potty business or chill in'. If I don't SEE him potty, I bring him back in and take him back out 15 mins later. I repeat this every 15. After 3 repetitions he was so tired he passed out!!!! Pitiful!!! He then got up 3 times during the night:(. He usually gets up once then goes back in crate). He actually had to potty 2 of those times. The 3rd time he just wanted to play. He started barking from his crate about 6. I gave up on sleep and took him out then fed him. He was soooo hyper! I took him on a walk.. Good news...he pot tied on the walk. When we returned I took him in the back yard and played. He pottied again. I put him in his play pen if I can't watch his every move. I give him verbal praise and treats when he does anything. I feel like a failure:(. My husband and I are crazy about Deuce. Any advice would be appreciated:)

sounds like a normal Frenchie to me.... took me over two years to fully triaing Cheli. Schedule is everything and if you know he has to go, stay out till he goes. Cheli would actually stop in front of me in the house and pee, while looking at me -- he still at age 3 does not single he has to go. We keep a tight schedule when at home with them... if we are out, he is crated.

Good guideline is, they can hold heir bladder for one hour more than they are old... so, if 4 months old... they can hold for 5 hours.

Thank u so much for your reassurance. Deuce was waking up @ 4:30am to potty then for good @5:45am. Why do you think he got up so many times last night?

Hudson is the same way. He's 8.5 months and we haven't had an accident in about a month because we are on a very precise schedule. If we weren't he would pee all over the house. He too is crated when we are gone because he doesn't think anything of peeing in the house.

Get on a schedule and stick to it! We only have accidents when I mess up.

But also remember he's a baby and is still figuring everything out. When Hudson was really little he had a potty pad at one end of his enclosure because he had to go so frequently. He's one that will pee in his crate too so that's taken some time. The first few months are the hardest! Hang in there.

We are very lucky with ours. Maple just turned 10 months and she is 100% house broken. When she has to go she walks over to the patio door and tapps/scratches the door. A lot of time the door is open anyway so she just walks out then.
Twice a week she is home alone for 7 hours and she waits patiently until we come back and let her out.
But I agree, routine/schedule is everything! When maple was a little pup we brought her out every time she woke up from a nap or after eating and of course first thing in the morning. She also had a pee pad inside that she used when she had to go.
When you bring him outside I wouldn play or pay him any attention until he goes potty. Then you praise him and start playing.

You are lucky! Maddie does not signal at all and doesn't think she's done anything wrong when she has an accident in the house. We try to let her out frequently when we are at home and we say the command "go potty." Hopefully it will sink in. A couple times a week she stays penned up for 6 or 7 hrs. She's able to hold it that long. I have noticed that she has been peeing in her bed at night. It happens immediately after we come in from the last potty break. She digs at her bedding so I figured it might be that she does not like the bedding or perhaps the smell of the detergent Im using. Or possible marking territory at this young age? We have 3 chihuahuas as well but they sleep in different area of the house. So, we re trying different things. I ordered a crate mat by Crypton. Waterproof and odor resistant. I'm thinking that since she gets warm so easily, she doesn't like anything furry that will make her hot. These beds are made of a nylon type fabric. She did pee on it the new pad other night...less than 5 min after coming in. So frustrating!!

Radar is also 100% potty trained, but it was a trial to get there. I agree with being consistent. I would do the same routine: immediately upon getting up in the morning, I came home for lunch and out we go and then immediately when I got home from work. When I was home and he wasn't in the crate I would take him out when he woke from a nap, when he stopped playing, when he ate... I swear I was at my wits end and kept telling him that he was lucky he was cute and worth all of effort. Finally you will have that aha moment (at least Radar did) and that ingrained stubborness responds to the routine and "gets it". Be patient, be consistent and don't threaten or yell when there is an accident. Take out the puppy, do the clean up and move forward, any attention is attention and that includes getting upset, reward the good behaviour and suddenly you get a potty trained puppy.

Its disappointing to hear how long it has taken others to be 100% potty trained. But, we will deal with it, cause we love Maddie so much. I guess what baffles me, is that she pees on her bedding...:( Even when we are out and about and theres a car ride involved, she will not go-regardless of how long we spend outside with her. She will not pee when we are out on a walk either.... As soon as she is put back into her travel crate, she pees! Knock on wood, accidents throughout the house have been really minimal...
