OMG! Freaking out! last night I was walking Moses and a snake came from nowhere. We stopped literally half a meter from it. I screamed, but Moses just stared at it. He tried to go have even a closer look and I was pulling back and the snake started to rise up and make this hissing sound! We just stepped back and waited for the snake to continue its course. Moses was intrigued and tried to follow it!

Now I worry that he obviously does not have any natural instinct to avoid snakes!
What if he encounters one while running free, he would just go and try to play with that thing

My previous dogs, if they saw a snake they would run away as fast as they can.

Most of the dogs I know are not scared of snakes. Some are a little unsure because they don't know what they are but still not scared.I would just keep a close eye on him. What kind of venomous snakes are there where you live?

Thanks for this info. I still keep thinking if I should have done something or reacted differently to help Moses understand to stay back from snakes.
Still creeping me out that now I know that this snake is lurking in the neighbourhood :fie:

Luckily we have here only one venomous snake and in case bitten, it requires a vet visit to assure that the airways won't swell shut.
Which is my concern as well, since these guys push their little muzzles straight on to everything.

The best way to make difference is that the venomous snake has a triangle shaped head...the other common one is also black, but have a round head and is not dangerous.
I got so freaked out last nite that cannot even recall what shape the head was...

So glad I had him on leash when that happened. I sure will keep a hawk's eye on my little guy when I dare to let him run free.

I had previously couple of tiny papillons and they both knew that it is not wise to go too close to a snake. The other one run off straight away yapping and the other one kept distance and his yapping had alarming tone in it. That's when I always knew that they have found something scary and suspicious.

These bulldogs seems to be sometimes too brave for their own good and give heart sinks to their mammies :)

Frenchie have no instinct to avoid anything that moves..... Cheli will go after anything in the yard that has movement.... snakes, bunnies, groundhogs, frogs, toads, birds, deer, leaves, trash, etc. In his mind it moves, it needs to go down! Lambeua on the other hand, just sits and stares at it all... no movement to them at all.

I'm glad to know that Jax isn't the only knucklehead that chases leaves blowing in the wind!

Nope! Wally will chase anything that moves, especially in our yard.

We only have 1 kind of venomous snake here, massassauga rattler, and I've run into one twice while renting a cottage up north, and both times I was walking Uma. Luckily I didn't have Wally then as I'm sure I would have rushed to the vet because of a bite. :fie: Uma listens to me so she stayed away from it.

Titan chases EVERYTHING. His most favorite currently is the little white butterflies during the day. Which I'm actually pretty sure they are moths. He will bounce around the yard and try to eat them if they get within reach haha.

We have very large Gardner snakes in our yard, because we live by the woods. But luckily no poisonous snakes!

I'm usually more concerned with the skunks :/ Both dogs get leashed to go potty at night so they can't run off and encounter one of the stinkers!

To no one's surprise I'm sure Wally got sprayed last year, right in the face. Luckily not the eyes. It was horrible but he didn't get sprayed straight on, it was between the fence. He's lucky he's cute!

Luckily we do not have skunks here, but I have heard nasty things about them, like after getting sprayed you have to wash the dog with tomato juice to get rid of the stink?
I was once touring Canada and drove by a skunk-road kill where the accident had apparently just recently happened. I can still "taste" the smell that came in the car... :barf:

It seems that chasing things really is a Frenchie thing! :)

How cute! I can picture little Titan going for the butterflies, jumping around like in a fairytale...but in my image they are the nice butterfly types, not moths

It's even worse while riding a motorcycle. You get a full view of the mess plus the extra strong smell. Yuck!

We'll said. This pretty much sums it up
Relief! Was concerned that my little boy may not be the sharpest knife...but it seems that it is just a bulldog thing :)
