Hey everyone,

I've been researching French Bulldog nutrition for my 8-month-old for the past 3 weeks, and honestly, I'm more confused than when I started. Every source says something different:

  • Some say 25% protein is enough for adults
  • Others swear by 30%+ for lean muscle
  • Puppy formulas say 29%, but is that the same for all breeds?
I asked my vet, and she said "feed high-quality food appropriate for life stage" — which is... helpful, I guess? But doesn't tell me what to actually LOOK FOR on the label.

Here's what I've learned so far (correct me if I'm wrong):

Adult French Bulldogs: 25–30% protein, 15–18% fat, 500–750 calories/day
Puppies (0–12 mo): 29% protein, 10%+ fat, 400–850 calories/day
Seniors (7+ yr): Still need 25–30% protein (counterintuitive, but muscle loss is real), 400–600 calories

The thing that blew my mind? Most pre-made foods don't clearly state the dry matter basis, so you can't actually compare them fairly. I was wasting money on "premium" food that was basically the same as mid-range options.

What I'm doing now:

  1. I calculate the dry matter percentage myself (subtract moisture, divide protein by dry matter)
  2. I look for NAMED protein sources only (no "meat meal" or "animal derivatives")
  3. I transition slowly over 7–10 days (my Frenchie has a sensitive stomach)
One question for experienced Frenchie owners:
Does your dog do better on grain-inclusive or grain-free? My current one has sweet potato and peas, but I'm wondering if I should switch.

Edit: I found this really helpful guide that broke down the exact numbers by life stage and showed me how to read labels properly. It also listed the 3 worst ingredients to avoid for French Bulldogs with allergies. Ended up being way more detailed than I expected:

Best Dog Food for French Bulldogs Nutrition Guide

Hope this helps someone else who's as lost as I was a few weeks ago.
