📰 What's new

Raw food brands and other inqueries :)

Good luck. :)

Its probiotics you're looking for. Prebiotics are 'food' for the good bacteria, but since you first need to establish a good colony of gut bacteria, you'll need probiotics, which will provide you with a variety of bacteria strains.

Thank you I will grab some pumpkin this weekend and I just did some more googling and I think I may have found a store that sells the tripe lol I'll prob go for the lamb or beef first. I'm usually ok with yucky stuff BUT this tripe has me shaking in my boots a little lmao because everyone keeps saying how horrible it is to handle! As for Vital Essentials I am having trouble finding it locally. I see it on Amazon but does anyone order their frozen food? How is delivery with that? I'm just worried it may spoil or something.

But let me tell you when I come home to that face I am overwhelmed with just wanting to make her happy lol. She truly cracks me up and she has turned my bf into a HUGE mush ball hahaha. She was the perfect addition to our place and I am loving seeing her personality unfold! They are some funny little things!!

Update question:

Is it prebiotic or probiotic? I ordered the gel form that comes in tubes but it said prebiotic so I canceled it, is that diff from what you give Bisou?

I can get Vital Essentials locally but the buffalo I got which is a different brand I ordered online and it was packed in a cooler with dry ice. Once frozen raw gets shipped, it's usually delivered within a few days. When the buffalo arrived, it was still frozen.

The gel is going to be great for your situation. You should see results quickly. I used it during the awful 'birthday cake' incident, which shall never be talked about again [shakes and shudders]. I use the powder now for regular maintenance just because it's easier to store.

As for the tripe, I think I speak for the rest of the group when I say that you absolutely MUST update us on your reaction to it. We know what Penelope's is going to be ;)

Lmao I will record a video or something of me opening it up. I've ordered the gel so it should be here soon! Gotta love Amazon Prime! I am happy to report that Penelope loves the goat milk in her food and it seems to be making her stool a bit firmer we're not all the way there yet but it's improving! And she's still liking her Primal Pronto it seems. I'll probably give her like a week or so before I introduce the tripe (or maybe I'm just using this as a stalling tactic lol!)

Hey guys so I brought her raw beef bones as a treat of sorts but any suggestions on quicker/easier raw treats like for potty training? Also I tried to give her a piece of banana yesterday lol she does NOT like it at all. Wouldn't touch it.

Oh and you thought I'd let it slide huh? Do tell of this birthday cake incident lmao!

We give marrow bones as a weekly treat. They're great for their teeth and they love them, but they're not really a quick reward type thing haha. As far as small "give every day" type treats, we use freeze dried single ingredient treats. Currently Hudson is eating bison liver treats.

Yup, as for treats you can use freeze dried meat (Primal makes some, too. Or there are plenty of other companies to choose from :) ). Dehydrated organs would be another option.

Awesome yea I need to get on getting her some today I swear everytime she goes on the puppy pad she likes up like "what is it with the no treats trend mommy!?" Lmao! Also when thawing her raw bone what method do you use? I have a pack of six but only want to thaw one at a time.

You can give the bones frozen. Especially when she is teething it will help cool down her mouth/gums.
If she wont touch them frozen, you can just take one out and thaw it in a bowl or hold it under warm water.

Just keep an eye on the marrow. If she isnt used to it yet, and already has some issues with soft stool going on, too much marrow could be contra productive, as marrow is quite rich. Depending on how big the bones are, Id maybe not let her have them for too long for now.
I usually only give bones to my guys for 20-30 mins anyway, and then take them away.
Some dogs can be quite protective over their bones, so its a good thing to teach that they have to always give it back to you. It depends on your dog (and you will figure this out over the next little while) but some dogs (mine included) go at it pretty harsh and could potentially file down their teeth. Thats another reason why I limit the 'bone time'.

Hey guys! Penelope went to the vet today and I'm happy to report she's up from 7lbs 10oz to 8.2 lbs from last sun (and starting her raw diet) the doctor went ahead and gave her the vaccines she was due for, 3 in total. And everything else is ok they said. Hips and knees are good and even with a small cough that usually happens after activity her chest sounded clear! Funny thing was when I mentioned that I'd switched her to raw the Dr. made a comment like "that's not optimal or what we recommend" and I thought to myself I'm sure you'd rather me be purchasing the Royal Canin from you. I also attribute the goats milk and change in diet to her stools firming up but the Dr. wanted to credit the meds.

After her appt we went back to Kiki's pet supply and I got her some Vital Essentials duck nibs and beef tripe treats and another bag of Primal Pronto to have on hand. I'm so happy she's doing ok and I'll try not to worry so much lol. I want to thank you guys for all your help and suggestions and I am beyond happy with the introduction to the raw diet so far. I think Penelope deserves a raw bone treat tomorrow! And I will make sure to time and monitor her!

No details. Just know that if your dog is on a grain-free diet, rice flour apparently also counts as a grain. Red Velvet cake mix + sensitive dog = super soaker butt. The worst part was that it took me two days to figure out what was causing the issues, so she kept getting the cake. It was well over a year ago but I still have nightmares.

Lmao girl did you not see the first poop photo I added to the thread? She hit the wall with her poop poor thing lol! No red velvet cake for miss Penelope!

Our last vet tried to tell us that the raw diet was "not appropriate" and "not a complete diet." I looked at her and said ok, you can live with him on kibble then... She finally let it slide. Our new vet is like yay raw how great, great job! So it varies vet to vet. My old boss and his wife are both high up in the vet school here (at one of the top vet schools in the country) and they both said the vets push kibble because they're paid, not because it's best. I suspected that but it's nice to have it confirmed. They're both on board with raw.

One of the SO's regulars from work just gifted him a book on the Raw diet today for Christmas! He has a 1 yr old boy named George who is fed raw. I love how many people in the pet community are educating themselves on raw. So far it's been a great change her stool has changed gotten solid she is already going less and I noticed she really seems to enjoy her food. It was fun watching her eat her bone today! She tore that thing up!
