Has anyone else quietly realised their Frenchie is… a bit too round?

I’m curious if anyone else has had this moment.

You’re clipping your Frenchie’s harness like you’ve done a thousand times, and suddenly you’re down to the last hole. Or you go to cuddle them on the sofa and realise there’s just… more of them than there used to be.

I had that moment recently and my first instinct was guilt. I feed good food, I care a lot, I read labels. But the truth is, I also say yes to “just one more treat” way more often than I admit. And Frenchies are the perfect dogs to make you feel like a monster for saying no.

What finally helped me was dropping the shame and treating it like any other health issue. I learned how to:

  • Check body condition properly (not just stare at the scale).
  • Be honest about how many calories actually come from treats.
  • Swap long, panting walks for short, cooler, easier ones he can really handle.
Once I stopped seeing “overweight” as me being a bad owner and started seeing it as just one more thing we can improve together, it got so much easier to act instead of just feeling bad.

If you’ve looked at your own Frenchie and thought “I love you to bits, but I think I’ve let you get a bit too round,” you’re definitely not alone. I put everything I learned into a clear, step‑by‑step guide here in case it helps anyone else:

Overweight French Bulldog: Healthy Weight, Risks, and Safe Weight Loss

No judgment, no crash diets, just a realistic plan for people who adore their chunk but want them to breathe easier and move better.

Has anyone else gone through this and come out the other side with a leaner, happier Frenchie? What actually made the difference for you?
