Calico Jack was surrendered when his owner set sail for distant shores and couldn't take him along. He has no apparent health concerns aside from mild allergies, which are controlled with paw wiping and the occasional antihistamine. When Jack came into rescue, he was a little thin and had dry skin, so his foster mom feeds him a premium kibble with a daily squirt of salmon oil. Jack's tongue often dangles rakishly from the side of his mouth, adding to his charm. He was neutered fairly recently, and the purse that used to contain the family jewels also dangles.
Calico Jack is housebroken and crate trained, though there are places he'd much rather be. He knows "sit" and is learning "off," but we think that it would be beneficial for him to be enrolled in a training class with his new owner. It would be a great bonding experience, and would keep his keen little mind occupied, as well as establishing an appropriate owner-dog relationship.
It takes a certain kind of person to keep a pirate as a pet. Pirates tend to be somewhat rowdy and, let's face it, larcenous individuals. True to type, Calico Jack is an intelligent, mischievous, active and agile dog. He has no problem hopping from floor to chair to table to see if there is a treasure up there with which to abscond. He likes to take the helm, and has a tendency to react inappropriately when physically pushed, especially when he is overstimulated or feels threatened. His previous owner reported that he was taken to a child's birthday party, and when the children started running around flapping their arms, Jack jumped up on a 7-year-old girl and administered a "light bite" to her arm. There was no puncture, just a minor scrape. He was in an inappropriate setting for an excitable, energetic young dog, but it is clear that Jack will need a sensible owner who is a calm, firm leader. For the first week in foster care, Calico Jack trailed a short leash that could be used to pull him off furniture and people when he didn't listen. A squirt of water from a spray bottle was effective in situations that required quick compliance. In general, though, if he has his sights set on deviltry, he can usually be redirected with a clear verbal command or a treat. Calico Jack would walk the plank for a treat!
Calico Jack likes other dogs, and is very playful. If he has a canine sibling in his new home, s/he must enjoy wrasslin', be fit enough to play rough, and have the self confidence to warn him off when he gets too pushy. He is exuberant, but he will back down when admonished by another dog. Jack is a big fan of walks, playing fetch, hard rubber toys, nylabones and antlers. Because he will often indulge in naughtiness if he is not kept occupied, "smart" toys stuffed with kibble or treats are a good option to provide him with mental stimulation and keep him out of trouble.
Jack is looking for a home without cats, small critters or young children, but responsible, dog-savvy teenagers (14+) are a possibility. He needs someone who will actively engage him, and include him in family activities. While his forever family does not need to have Frenchie experience, they should have experience with a bulldog breed, and be prepared to deal with a strong-willed, active pup. He would be a bit of a handful for first-time dog owners. A stay-at-home person is best, but Jack will be okay with someone who works, as long as he has a mid-day break. If he is left alone during the day, his owner will need to batten down the hatches and ensure that he is in a secure area with plenty to do to keep himself occupied. He would probably love to go to the office, but one of his little eccentricities is that he likes to hop onto desks and walk on computer keyboards. Some co-workers might not appreciate this. Another consideration would be keeping him safe and contained. He is likely to dart out of a doorway in search of adventure if afforded the opportunity.
